Watching and Discussing

Smotrim… Obsuzhdaem… (Watching and discussing) is a weekly prime time talk show, the only one to show creative, feature length documentaries in Russia.

The show is broadcast Saturday evenings by Rossia-K (a.k.a. Kultura) channel. The channel is a part of the All-Russian State TV and Radio Company and can be accessed by almost 75 percent of the country’s population.

The films (52 minutes to 2 hours) are followed by 39 minutes of in-studio discussion moderated by Vladimir Khotinenko.

The concept of the show belongs to Sergei Miroshnichenko and Grigory Libergal who also select the films for the program.

Project authors:

Sergey Miroshnichenko - Honored Artist of Russia, Emmy award - winning documentary film director and professor at the All Russian State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow. Sergei heads his own documentary film studio, Studio “Ostrov”, and has a very distinguished career as a documentary film maker and as a producer. Among his projects are:

Grigory Libergal is a Vice President of Russian Documentary Film and Television Guild. Among the films he has produced or executively produced four has won the prestigious Nika Award for Best Documentary of the Year. His Open Skies distribution project (1994-2003) was crucial in bringing documentaries back to television screens in Russia/CIS.  Since 2006 Libergal and Miroshnichenko act as curators of the Moscow Documentary Film Festival Documentary Program.

Vladimir Khotinenko is a prominent film director, screen writer and actor, People’s Artist of Russia, winner of Nika and many other awards. He is the head of the film direction chair at the All Russian State Institute of Cinematography and also leads the directors workshop in VGIK and Higher Courses of Directors and Scriptwriters.
